The Scorpion girls basketball team kept its postseason hopes alive Tuesday, Jan. 24, after a thrilling 47-46 victory at Chino Valley High School.

Senior Ashley Haas, No 11, cheers her team Jan. 20, when the Scorpions hosted Mingus Union High School. Sedona won, 48-43. On Tuesday, Jan. 24, Sedona traveled to Chino Valley High School where it won, 47-46.Sedona Red Rock High School currently stands at No. 19 in the Division III Arizona Interscholastic Association power point polls, which were updated early Wednesday, Jan. 25.

Sedona is No. 7 in Section III [Division III], with the top eight heading to the Section III Tournament, which is scheduled to begin Tuesday, Feb. 7, in Surprise.

At Chino Valley, sophomore Amber Rippy scored 12 points and had six assists to lead the Scorpions to a 47-46 win.

Other standouts included junior Tiana Hatler-Stefick, with nine points, 10 rebounds and six steals, while junior Sierra Hatler-Stefick had 10 points and three rebounds.

Sophomore guard Morgan Hawes had eight points, six rebounds and four assists.

“We didn’t play the greatest and they almost beat us,” Hawes said. “We have to play better if we want to go to state.”

Up 18-8 after the first quarter of play, Sedona struggled the rest of the way as the Cougars outscored the Scorpions 38-29 through the last three quarters.

Down 38-36 with six minutes to go, Chino Valley standout Mari Paul hit a three-pointer from the top of the key to give her Cougars a 39-38 advantage.

The two teams were even at 20-20 in the second and third quarters, but Chino Valley turned it on in the fourth, outscoring the Scorpions 18-9.

“They were so afraid of [Mari Paul] driving to the basket that they stayed back and she hit that three,” Sedona Head Coach Tina Hawes said.

Hawes continued to say she wasn’t pleased with her team’s performance Tuesday.

“They weren’t my favorite people. We just didn’t execute and some of our girls didn’t play well. If we want to make it to sectionals, or state, we’ll have to work harder,” Hawes said.

Despite Sedona’s bad play, the Scorpions were still able to come away with a 47-46 victory. Sedona needs every win it can get over the next week as the regular season ends Friday, Feb. 3.

With the win, Sedona is 15-7 overall this season and is 9-5 in Arizona Interscholastic Association power point play.

The Scorpions are scheduled to host Flagstaff High School on Friday, Jan. 27, then turn around and host cross-valley rival Camp Verde High School on Saturday, Jan. 28.

Friday’s tipoff is set for 7 p.m. while Saturday’s game is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. Senior night will take place after the girls game and before the Sedona boys game, which is set for 4 p.m.

Sedona’s regular season schedule comes to an end next week when it travels to Mingus Union High School on Thursday, Feb. 2, and Camp Verde on Friday, Feb. 3. Both of those games start at 5:30 p.m.

When a coach wants to motivate their team, they talk to them privately about what needs to be worked on rather than being negative in public communications. This coach tends to complain about the team in public. When one does that, the negativity can lead to a self-fulfilling prophesy. This team has done well this year -- "motivating" through negativity never works!
