Junior Cassie Sanchez, No. 10, is surrounded by three Coconino High School defenders Tuesday, Jan. 3. The Sedona Red Rock High School girls soccer team struggled to put the ball in the net Tuesday, losing 2-0.

The girls soccer team at Sedona Red Rock High School lost another close one Tuesday, Jan. 3, as the Panthers of Coconino High School won, 2-0.

“We actually had them frustrated for a while,” fifth-year Sedona Head Coach Tom Cadigan said. “They are a good team, and so are we, but we just came up short.”

Coconino led 1-0 at halftime and netted a score in the second half for the 2-0 win. The Panthers had only seven shots on goal Tuesday, while Sedona had five.

Senior goalkeeper Sierra Winters recorded five saves against Coconino, doing her best to keep her Scorpions in it, but in the end, it was the offense that came up short.

With the loss, Sedona drops its regular season record to 1-3 overall this season.

The Coconino loss was the third straight for Sedona after opening the season with a 3-2 penalty-kick victory over Bradshaw Mountain High School on Dec. 1.

“I think we’re doing alright so far. It was a disappointing loss to Coconino for sure, but the girls have a great attitude and they won’t give up,” Cadigan said.

Currently, the Scorpions are ranked No. 45 in the Division III Arizona Interscholastic Association power point poll, which was released Thursday, Jan. 5.

The Scorpions will take a break from power point matches for a while, as they are scheduled to play in the Phoenix Country Day Invitational this coming weekend.

On Friday, Jan. 6, Sedona is scheduled to play Fountain Hills High School at 9:30 a.m., and will play Saguaro High School at 12:30 p.m.

On Saturday, Jan. 7, the Scorpions are set to play Sunnyslope High School at 8 a.m., then they turn around and play Safford High School at 12:30 p.m.

All matches will be played at Phoenix Country Day School with awards being handed out to the team with the best record within their respective pools.

Sedona will return home Tuesday, Jan. 10, to host Prescott High School. Official start time is set for 6 p.m.

“We are looking forward to that tournament. It’s going to be a lot of fun. It’s always good competition down there,” Cadigan said.

On a side note, Cadigan reported the rematch with Mingus Union High School was moved to a different date.

Originally scheduled for Friday, Jan. 13, the match was moved by Sedona Athletic Director John Parks and Mingus Athletic Director Mike Boysen to Thursday, Jan. 19, with a start time of 5 p.m.

After the Phoenix Country Day Invitational tournament, Sedona has only five matches left on the regular season schedule, two of which are home.

After Prescott on Jan. 10, Sedona will host Page High School on Tuesday, Jan. 17, then compete in three straight road contests to end the regular season.

The last match of the season is at Bradshaw Mountain High School on Thursday, Jan. 26, with a start time of 6 p.m.
