The Big Park Community School cross-country team did quite well in Prescott on Sept. 21, participating in the Yavapai County Middle School Invitational at Kuebler Field.
“The cross-country team has done a great job this season. They are a dedicated and motivated bunch, meeting every morning before school at 7 a.m. to run,” Big Park Head Coach Diane Schumacher said. “The best part for me as a coach has been to see this team really support each other; they are always cheering each other on,” Schumacher added. For the girls, Jessica Kirkham finished 12th overall with a 15:18.33 time. Kirkham was the only varsity runner for the Coyotes’ girls team. In the boys race, Big Park runner Neil Smith was solid, finishing 16th overall with a 14:39.08 time while teammate Kenny Cunningham was 36th overall with a 17:53.03. Trey Montgomery was 46th overall with a 23:14.04 time and Tyrak Coronado was 47th overall with a 26:24.35 time. Big Park wasn’t the only Sedona school in attendance as the West Sedona School cross-country team was in Prescott as well. Top performances for the Wildcats included Denny Drotzmann for the boys, who won the Yavapai County Middle School Invitational with a 13:05.48 time. For the girls, Malia Sonn was 31st overall with a 18:46.43 time while Lily Putman took 44th place with a 20:01.40 time. Teammate Julian Schmidt was 53rd overall with a 22:21.36 time. Next up, both schools are scheduled to participate in the Chino Valley Invitational on Wednesday, Sept. 28. Official start time is set for 4 p.m. |

Although the Coyotes didn’t have enough runners to finish in the team standings, there were some outstanding individual finishes in the fourth meet of the season for Big Park.
