Mayer High School came to town Tuesday, Dec. 13, looking for its fourth victory of the season, but the Scorpions of Sedona Red Rock High School were too much for the Wildcats, winning 51-15.

Junior Morgan Hawes, No. 1, begins to trap a Mayer High School player on defense Tuesday, Dec. 13. The Sedona Red Rock High School girls basketball team had no problems with the visiting Wildcats, winning 51-15.“I guess we knew we were facing a small team before they got here, so our goal was to be disciplined on offense and defense. We want to be more prepared and I think we accomplished that,” second-year Sedona Head Coach Tina Hawes said after the game Tuesday.

Sedona improved to 7-2 overall this season, and 3-2 in Arizona Interscholastic Association power point games.

The Scorpion girls basketball team is ranked No. 16 in the Division III AIA power point polls, which were released Wednesday, Dec. 14.

Top performances Tuesday against Mayer for the Scorpions included junior forward Sierra Hatler-Stefick  who scored eight points, pulled eight rebounds and had five steals in the 51-15 victory.

“I think we played very disciplined basketball against Mayer, and we worked together very well as a team,” Hatler-Stefick said.

Sophomore guard Morgan Hawes wasn’t bad either, leading all Sedona scor-ers with nine points while recording two steals and two assists in the win.

“I think we actually started to play as a team,” Hawes said. “We had drive and played with discipline. If we play like that every game, I think we are unstoppable.”

Sophomore guard Amber Rippy also chipped in eight points, four assists and four steals against Mayer.

“I think it’s important to recognize Amber [Rippy], Morgan [Hawes] and Sierra [Hatler-Stefick] played only half the game against Mayer and they were still able to perform like they did. They did a great job,” Tina Hawes said.

The Scor-pions will get to test their skills against a bigger Division II opponent Friday, Dec. 16, when Sedona travels to Prescott High School.

The Badgers are 6-3 overall this season and are ranked No. 28 in the Division II AIA power point polls. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
