Longtime Head Coach Harry Schneider wanted to make sure his team was ready for the Section I [Division IV] Championships this week.
He did so by taking the Sedona Red Rock High School cross-country team to Holbrook to run in the Holbrook Invitational on Friday, Oct. 21.
Schneider admitted it was an important meet for Sedona to get a feel for the course before it really matters Friday, Oct. 28, when the sectional championships are scheduled to take place.
“Many of our kids just ran together, to get a feel for what the course is like. We had a few out sick as well, so we’re not really paying attention to how kids finished time- and place-wise,” Schneider said.
As a team, the Sedona boys finished 10th overall out of 21 total teams, but the girls were unable to field a team and did not place.
Junior standout Mykala Seresun missed her second straight meet Friday, having sat out the Yavapai County Championships on Oct. 19 due to illness.
Seresun isn’t the only girl out for the Scorpions as sophomore Tatiana Chionis is feeling under the weather this week too, according to Schneider.
“We hope the two of them are healthy this week. I think they will be ready for the sectionals,” Schneider said.
Junior Eva Wilson, still one of the better trail runners in Division IV, finished 16th overall Friday with a 21:52.20 time. Rolonda Jumbo from Chinle High School finished first overall in the girl’s race with an 18:52.10 time.
Taylor Gage, a junior for Sedona this season, ran with Wilson for most of the race, and finished 22nd overall with a 22:14.10 time.
For the boys, the top finisher for Sedona was senior Brandon Snickers, who finished 38th overall with an 18:23.50 time.
Sophomore Travis Okie was 62nd overall with a 19:07.40 time while senior Gabe Greenfield was 68th with a 19:24 mark.
Next up for Sedona, the Scorpions will participate in the Section I Championships in Holbrook on Friday, with an official start time of 8 a.m.
The Division IV State Championships are scheduled to be held Saturday, Nov. 5, at the Cave Creek Golf Course in Phoenix. An official start time has yet to be announced.
