Like the Energizer Bunny, junior Scorpion runner Mykala Seresun keeps going and going and going during this 2011 season.
Seresun was at the top of the list once again Saturday, Oct. 8, finishing first overall at the Jack Boehle Invitational in Flagstaff at Coconino High School.
The young star beat out 48 of her peers for the first-place medal, crossing the finish line with a more than respectable time of 18:58.30.
Seresun’s mark was a full minute and 14 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Jayde Secody of Page High School, who ended her day with a 20:12.91 time.
It is the fifth win in six races for Seresun, who is having a season to remember for the Sedona Red Rock High School cross-country team in 2011.
“Mykala [Seresun] really running well, having a great year. She’s got a little cold right now, but she thinks it is minor so for her to go out and do that well is amazing,” Sedona Head Coach Harry Schneider said.
As a team, Sedona finished third overall with 81 points. Hopi High School was first with 44 points while Tuba City High School was second with 46.
The Scorpions had two other runners in the top five Saturday, junior Eva Wilson, who was fourth with a 20:49.68 time, while junior Taylor Gage was fifth with a 20:54.02.
“Eva [Wilson] cramped up a bit, but she toughed it out. Taylor [Gage] won this meet last year and is doing well,” Schneider said.
For the boys, Sedona finished sixth overall in Flagstaff this past weekend with 173 points. Tuba City won the event with 40 points while Page was second with 53 and Hopi rounded out the top three with 73.
Top performances for the Scorpion boys included senior Brandon Snickers, who was 18th overall with a 17:40.52 time, while senior Zac Johnson was 33rd overall with an 18:46.76 time.
Senior Gabe Greenfield and sophomores Travis Okie and Kris Schindele came in from the course together, with Schindele getting 41st overall at 19:21.22. Greenfield was 42nd with a 19:26.03 time and Okie was 43rd with a 19:27.13.
“The boys have a nice team right now, but we just don’t have a superstar, and that hurts them at the moment,” Schneider said.
Next up, the Scorpions are scheduled to travel south to Scottsdale on Saturday, Oct. 15, to participate in the Thunderbird Invitational at Mountain View Park.
Three meets remain this season including the Thunderbird Invitational. The second-to-last meet of the regular season comes Tuesday, Oct. 18, at the Yavapai County Championships in Prescott.
Sedona is scheduled to compete in the Holbrook Invitational on Friday, Oct. 21, giving the Scorpions a look at the course they will be running on for the Section I [Division IV] Championships.
The Section I Championships are scheduled to take place Friday, Oct. 28, at the Holbrook Golf Course.
“It’s an advantage for our kids to run the course a week before sectionals. There will be 30 teams there looking to do the same thing,” Schneider said.
