Cowboys spoil senior night for Scorpions

On senior night Saturday, Jan. 28, the Scorpion girls basketball team was unable to send off its seniors with a win as rival Camp Verde High School spoiled the party, winning 50-39.

Sophomore Morgan Hawes splits the defense Saturday, Jan. 28, against the visiting Cowboys.“We lost the game in the first half,” Sedona Red Rock High School Head Coach Tina Hawes said. “We did a good job overall containing their big girl, but we just didn’t pull things together as a team until it was too late.”

Camp Verde took a 15-9 lead after the first quarter of play Saturday and outscored the Scorpions 20-10 in the second period for a 35-19 lead at halftime.

Sedona actually outscored the Cowboys 20-15 in the second half, but it was too little, too late for the Scorpions as they lost for the second straight year against a Verde Valley rival on senior night. Mingus Union High School beat the Scorpions on senior night Feb. 1, 2011, 51-42.

The Scorpions got a solid effort from senior Taihlor Nolte, who scored 10 points and had four rebounds, two steals and one assist.

“Our team played amazing. We played hard and tried the best we could. Camp Verde was just better, but to me that doesn’t matter because we played like a team, and I couldn’t imagine a better senior night,” Nolte said.

Other standouts included sophomore Morgan Hawes, who had 10 points, six assists, three rebounds and two steals, while junior Sierra Hatler-Stefick had seven points and six rebounds.

“I think we needed to take our time on offense and not force shots and be the team that we know we are,” Hatler-Stefick said. “On defense we did OK but we can do better.”

Sophomore Amber Rippy chipped in seven points and seven rebounds with one steal.

With the loss, Sedona drops its regular season record to 15-9 overall. The Scorpions currently sit at No. 26 in the Arizona Interscholastic Association power point polls, which were released Tuesday, Jan. 31.

Sedona is ranked No. 8 in Section III [Division III], and it may barely sneak in to the sectional tournament next week depending on how the Scorpions finish up this week.

Next up, Sedona travels to Mingus on Thursday, Feb. 2. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Sedona wraps up the 2011-2012 regular season Friday, Feb. 3, when it travels to Camp Verde. Tipoff against the Cowboys is set for 5:30 p.m.

Curious as to how decisions about which games to cover, whether they appear in the newspaper or online. Sedona lost this game to Camp Verde, and again on February 3rd, with both games covered by the printed RRN. The same Sedona team beat Mingus on February 2nd (the night before the loss to Camp Verde), and also beat them at home a couple of weeks earlier. But those games were not featured. In fact, the second one was never mentioned. It would be nice to have coverage and support for their wins as well as losses. Overall, they had a good season.

Perhaps the game was "lost in the first half", per the coach, because a starting group of seniors being honored on Senior Night, but who don't normally get much playing time, began the game and were left in until they were down several points (half the first quarter) before the usual starters were played. Those girls than had to begin the game in the hole! It was a coaching decision that may have had a negative impact......
