The Big Park Community School basketball players haven’t stopped going to the gym every day after school since their seasons have ended, but now, they are on the other side of the game.
Members of both the boys and girls Big Park basketball teams are running an intramural basketball league for elementary school children. Ten players do it all: coach, referee and run the scoreboard as Big Park boys Head Coach Amy Parrella supervises. In return, the Big Park players receive class credit.
Starting in the beginning of November, 65 first- through fourth-graders have learned the basic skills and drills of basketball from the older Big Park kids. Then the players draft their teams — between seven and eight players — pick a team name and coach their teams in seven games throughout three months.
