Junior forward Katie Adams said there’s nothing like a victory over rival Camp Verde High, just a few minutes after her Sedona Red Rock High girls basketball team beat the Cowboys at home Tuesday, Dec. 9, 52-41. …

The Verde Valley School girls basketball program held a meeting a few weeks ago before the season began to see who would be interested in playing for the 1A conference school. Head coach Catrien Van Assenbelft was astonished by what happened next.

Twenty-three players showed up at the meeting, a record turnout for the Coyotes to begin a season. Van Assenbelft’s concerns of possibly not having enough kids quickly changed to, “What am I going to do with them all?”

When practice officially began for the girls team on Monday, Dec. 1, almost a month after most high schools begin, 14 to 17 players showed up to practice ready and willing to learn.…

The Big Park Community School girls basketball team began practice a few short weeks ago with one goal in mind: repeat last season’s success.

Big Park managed to post a 10-3 overall record and claimed a Verde Valley League title during the 2007-2008 campaign.

Not an easy task to repeat to say the least.…

Following a 3A-West regional championship Oct. 31, the Sedona Red Rock High cross country team finished third [boys] and fourth [girls] respectively, falling short of their season goal which was to win a state title.

“I think it was disappointing we didn’t do better, but we have a great team, and no one can take that away,” senior Chris Lloyd said.

Despite Lloyd and his team’s feelings of disappointment, finishing third at state is nothing to look down upon, especially since Sedona finished eleventh in 2006 and seventh in 2007.…

The Sedona Red Rock High football team honored a fallen comrade Friday, Oct. 24, paying tribute before their game against Wickenburg High to defensive coordinator Matt Vukelich who passed away Oct. 19 due to heart failure.

Players held up their hands and formed a V with their fingers like Spock in “Star Trek” symbolizing “Coach V” who was loved by all on the team, not just his defensive players.

“Coach V meant a lot to us on this team. He was our heart and soul, our inspiration,” junior lineman Zack Saxman said.…

Trying to mimic their big brothers in high school who got a huge victory over Tuba City High this past weekend, the Sedona Stingers football team had a big win of their own Saturday, Oct. 18, defeating Cottonwood by the final score of 12-7.

When asked how big this victory was for his Stingers, eight-year-old Michael Ortega wasn’t short on words.…

Walking quietly to the pool, a few maintenance men work diligently, readying the area for the upcoming competition.

The water, gently sitting in a bowl of concrete, was still, like a secret lake out in the mountains somewhere very few people have ever been to.

Looking up, blue skies masked the air just like the water below, making it look like a spectator was exploring a few miles below sea level in a distant ocean.…

On a cold and rainy October morning, cross country teams from all over the state of Arizona gathered to participate in one of the more brutal courses around in the Mingus Mountain Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 4.

With the sun taking a seat behind the clouds like a football fan does in his favorite chair, teams began to arrive at Clarkdale-Jerome Middle School.

Sweatshirts, pants, long socks and beanie caps adorned their delicate runner bodies in an effort to keep all extremities warm for the upcoming competition.…
