When the Sedona Red Rock High School boys basketball team took the court for the first time at the end of May to begin preparing for the 2008 version of summer basketball, each and every player looked around as if someone or something was missing.…

If fans of the Arizona Diamondbacks are wondering why they can’t score any runs recently against big league opponents, maybe it’s because a group of baseball players in Sedona is hogging them all. …

Offense was the key as the Sedona minors softball team got back to their winning ways on May 20 by scoring 10 runs in the first two innings and going on to defeat the Cottonwood Jayhawks at Riverfront Park in Cottonwood in extraordinary fashion, 14-5.

“We haven’t been hitting as of late but the bats came around against the Jayhawks and that was the difference,” Sedona head coach Kevin Brackin said.

Sedona started the season 3-0 before losing three in a row coming into the game against the Jayhawks.…

With temperatures reaching nearly 100 degrees in Sedona this past weekend, kids ages eight to 18 enjoyed a little football as the Sedona Youth Football program put on its first annual mini-camp May 17 and May 18 at Sedona Red Rock High.

Nationally renowned football technician Bill Williams and his coaching staff ran the show teaching kids the very basic fundamentals — blocking and tackling — during the two day mini-camp.

“I thought the camp went extremely well. These kids showed the ability to retain information and apply it to the field, something that does not happen often,” Williams said.…

As tough as it is to win one 3A state track and field championship, it’s even more difficult to win two in a row.

The Sedona Red Rock High girls track and field team found that out the hard way Saturday, May 9. They finished second, with 93 points, behind Blue Ridge High, who claimed their second title in three years with 112.5 points.

As for the boys, they had one of the better meets in school history, finishing third overall with 68 points, behind Blue Ridge in second, with 89, and Safford High, who won it all with 104 points scored.…

When newly appointed Sedona Red Rock High head football coach Rob Lezcano took the job on March 7, his visions for the program couldn’t help but race through his head like a day at the Daytona 500.

In his short tenure as head coach, which started exactly two months ago today, Lezcano has already identified his current talent at the high school and his future talent at the local grade schools.

He’s made a Sedona football Web site; he’s hired his assistant coaches; and he’s gotten 40 to 50 kids working out in the weight room at 6 a.m. and after school.…

If horse racing is the sport of choice to get your juices flowing, then the 134th running of the famous Kentucky Derby is for you.

The Sedona Red Rock High School softball team saw something it hasn’t seen a lot of this season — the seventh inning.

On Thursday, April 17, the Scorpions were tied with Parker going into the seventh inning and lost by one, 8-7.

With a 2-19 overall record, the young team isn’t used to making it all seven innings nor is it used to being tied in the bottom of the fifth.

The Broncs, who beat Sedona 9-2 on March 24 on its home field, wasn’t expecting to have to put up such a fight, but the Scorpions came out ready to play, Sedona’s first-year coach  Brian Bergner Jr. said.

In the bottom of the first, with the Scorpions down 3-0, senior Kim “Sosa” Desmond stepped to the plate and hit a double, bringing home freshman Angelica Mlynarczyk, making it a 3-1 affair.…
