The 2009 campaign was a disappointment for Head Coach Pedro Ortega Sr. and his West Sedona School baseball team, finishing 3-8 overall on the season, which included two losses at the region tournament in Prescott last May.

westsedonawildcatIt is 2010 however, and after talking with Ortega, 2009 is a distant memory.

“We didn’t do some things last year that we wanted to, but I have some kids coming back, and we have some newcomers that should be great for us,” Ortega said.

The 2009 group did start the season 0-6 but finished 3-2, which catapulted the Wildcats into the 2010 schedule. On March 2, West Sedona defeated Beaver Creek School by the final score of 5-2.

“Hey, it took us almost a month and a half to get our first win last year,” Ortega said laughing.

The Wildcats lost a tough one March 11 to Camp Verde Middle School [9-5] but were up 3-0 until the fifth inning, suggesting this Wildcat team might contend for a region title this season.

“Camp Verde is probably the best team in our league and we hung with them, so I think their are good things ahead this year,” Ortega said.

Top Returners

The Wildcats return only four players from last year’s squad but will be led by eighth-grade standout Kyle Thumwood who will take the mound as the No. 1 starter for West Sedona this season.

Eighth-grade left fielder Juan Carlos Diaz is back as well and should have a hefty bat in the lineup to swing this season while seventh-grade starting shortstop Wesley Mikulewicz returns after getting quality time as a sixth grader last year.

Mikulewicz will be the No. 2 pitcher this season for the Wildcats.

Last but not least, Zeke Saxman returns and should start at third base this season for West Sedona while also seeing time at shortstop and on the mound as the No. 3 starter.

“We’ve got four guys back that will contribute this season that I expect big things out of,” Ortega said.

Top Newcomers

There are seven newcomers to the Wildcat bunch in 2010, most of which will find a starting role on the diamond over the next two months.

Starting with the eighth-graders, Tyler Underwood is expected to start in right field this year while Chayton Hopkins should be the second baseman.

In the seventh-grade group, Tucker Davis will be behind home plate for Ortega calling the shots while Jasper Herrick mans first base.

Irie Massey will be seen roaming center field this season while Kevin Schweiss and Mason Bradshaw will be utility players and first off the bench.

Look for the Wildcats to be just above .500 this season and hopefully playing for a region title come Friday, April 23, and Saturday, April 24, at Sedona Red Rock High School.

 • To the Editor and Sports Writer:

I applaud your efforts in providing us the local sports news. However I along with others feel that you are bias when it comes to reporting the sports news. Once again you only profiled the West Sedona Team. There are Big Park Teams as well. It is frustrating when you leave those kids out as well. Call me an upset parent, but the last that I checked, your paper is being sold in the VOC, so why not report on the news of the VOC as well. To take it a step further, why not include the girls sports as well? Even better idea, why wait till 3-weeks in the season to report on it? Why not do a page of both schools and both the girls and boys sports at the beginning of the season? That way it gets it out early and is fair to both schools. I can not imagine that it would take any more effort. Probably two days of interviews (1 WS, 1 BP) and then the time to write the articles.

Well I am only a customer of your paper, and I would hope that my suggestions would be considered.
