With five regular season games remaining for both girls and boys basketball teams at Sedona Red Rock High School, the state tournament is tantalizingly within reach.

Junior Kristina Schindele, No. 20, powers her way to the net through North Pointe Prep juniors Rhiannon Casselman, No. 2, and Maryann Al-Shiteawi in Sedona Red Rock High School’s 66-16 home domination of North Pointe Prep on Tuesday, Jan. 28.

“We’re looking to get there,” senior forward Gabrielle Simon said. “We’re working better as a team together. We’re staying more positive on the court.”

Having put together a four-game win streak, including a solid 46-32 victory over Glendale High School Saturday, Jan. 25, at the Hoop it Up at the Arena Challenge at U.S. Airways Arena in Phoenix, head girls basketball coach Jackie Strickling wanted to make clear that any reports of struggles for the team — now 10-13 and eight spots away from a playoff berth in the latest Arizona Interscholastic Association power rankings — have been greatly exaggerated.

“We’re not struggling,” she said. “We’re actually doing very well.”

As with the boys basketball team [12-13], the scoring average has risen for the Scorpions girls concurrently with their win total. A 50-point home win over North Pointe Prep on Tuesday, Jan. 29, marked the third of the last four games in which SRRHS scored over 50 points while holding the opponent to 40 points or less.
