On senior night at Sedona Red Rock High on Thursday, Oct. 19, the girls volleyball team defeated River Valley High in five sets.

After Marisa Byrnes, Taylor Wolfe, Kelsey Mallon, Jaclyn Cook and Megan Montieth were honored in a pre-game ceremony, the girls went at it in a first-game 25-11 trouncing.

Wolfe appeared dominant at her new outside hitting position, getting more than 20 total kills in the contest with seven in the first game.

Cook gave Wolfe opportunities with smooth sets, while Byrnes, Mallon and Montieth provided defense with hustle digs and dives and transitional serve receives.

Despite winning, the girls struggled with finishing off RVHS. The Scorpions had leads in two of the game

losses but could not close.

It has been a problem all season.

?We need to do a better job of closing out teams like that. I don?t know if they are playing not to lose. We need to try to play the same way the whole game,? Head Coach John Parks said.

Sedona hopes to find its killer instinct against Wickenburg High in the season finale Thursday, Oct. 26.

As either the fifth or fourth seed in the regional tournament, SRRHS will get a rematch with WHS in the first round. Should Sedona win on the road, it will have to win a coin flip to get a home game against WHS on Saturday, Oct. 28. A loss means a first-round road game, and a loss in the coin flip means the same.

Last Thursday, however, playoffs were off the mind. With four of the five seniors playing together since eighth grade, Senior Night was a rehashing of fond memories.

?All the memories happened on the bus trips,? Wolfe said.

The girls were known for spreading air mattress onto the seats of the bus on road trips, and with their laptops making a moving movie theater.

?This is the most creative travel team that we have ever had. How they set up at the back of the bus on these trips — it?s like a hotel back there,? Parks said.

The team hopes it has more than one more chance to cruise in self-created luxury before it is forced to say goodbye.

Should SRRHS beat Wickenburg in the regional tournament, it will automatically qualify in the state tournament.

?I know our seniors really want to go to state. Hopefully the rest of the team can come through for them,? Parks said.
