Having lost only two seniors to graduation in 2010, the Sedona Red Rock High School softball team is back this spring looking to go further than last season’s first-round state playoff exit.

head coach john brown talks with his team before practice Friday, Feb. 24. Brown has turned the Sedona Red Rock High School softball program around, compiling a 36-15 overall record in his first two seasons. It seems like years ago when the Scorpion softball program was 2-20 to finish the season. That, in fact, was 2008. But the four seasons before that Sedona collectively won two games, making it one of the worst softball programs in the state.

With a new coach, and a good group of youngsters coming up through the system, things have changed in Scorpion softball land.

Entering his third year at the helm, Sedona Head Coach John Brown looks to take the Scorpions to a whole new level.

“This regular season will be better than last year and hopefully we’ll make a run in the state playoffs,” Brown said in an interview Monday, Feb. 28.

The Scorpions finished the 2010 campaign with an 18-10 overall record but were bounced by Florence High School in the first round of the 3A conference state tournament, 7-2.

This spring, the Scorpions return almost everyone and are adding a few new faces to help out at the plate and in the field.

Of course the biggest name on the team, one that changes the game instantaneously, is junior Whitney Cooper.

Making her third position switch in as many seasons, Cooper should be the everyday shortstop come this weekend when the Scorpions open 2011 in the Anthem Invitational.

Cooper pitched almost every inning as a freshman in 2009, was the starting third baseman in 2010 and is now making the move to shortstop in 2011.

“We pitched inside last year so we kept Whitney [Cooper] at short, but this year Shelby [Cordova] has really worked hard and can control both sides of the plate. This means I can put Whitney where she belongs at short,” Brown said.

Cooper’s statistics at the plate in 2010 were mind boggling, as she hit .646 with 14 home runs and 70 RBIs. Cooper broke the school record with her home run and RBI totals, but also added 13 doubles and seven triples.

Cooper also pitched in 2010, recording a 1.68 earned run average in 87⅓ innings pitched with 91 strikeouts in 16 games started.

With Cooper at short, sophomore Shelby Cordova will be Sedona’s starting pitcher this year. Cordova had a 1.08 ERA with 72 strikeouts in 84⅓ innings in 2010.

Other top returners include junior Maria Micheli, who will be behind the plate again this season, while junior Ashley Haas will patrol center field.

Junior Sarah O’Neill will be in left field again this season while senior Dixie Clinkenbeard returns to right field.

Sophomore Haley Davis also returns and should be at second base for the Scorpions this season.

Outlook

With Cooper leading the way, the Scorpions shouldn’t have any trouble contending for a 3A West Region crown this year with only Estrella Foothills High School standing in their way.

The Scorpions should win over 20 games this season and more than likely, should be in the final four at the 3A state tournament come May.
