For the second straight game, junior pitcher Emily Aitken struck out nine but was betrayed by key defensive errors as Sedona Red Rock High School’s softball team [5-4] fell at home, 12-8, Wednesday, April 2, to Page High School.

Senior Khalie Barber slams a triple that ended up bouncing off the right field fence during Sedona Red Rock High School's 14-4 home win Tuesday, March 25, against Cortez High School. The Scorpions host section-leading Camp Verde High School on Friday, April 11.

“Emmy was pitching well. They were hitting well tonight,” Scorpions head softball coach Mike Keider said. “It was just errors, that’s all I can say. They stood out as mental [and] they just get ballooned.”

SRRHS would end up with a total of six errors against Page after committing three errors in an 8-6 loss Tuesday, April 1, to Fountain Hills High School. And without junior Sophie Copenhaver at third base and sophomore outfielder Josie Barrick unavailable as well due to other school commitments this week, those errors manifested in four Scorpions having to play unfamiliar positions, as an already thin bench shrank to two freshmen.

“I didn’t find out how the lineup was going to be until the night before the Fountain Hills game,” Keider said. “We had to make defensive adjustments about an hour before the game. It just killed the momentum.”

Freshmen Tara Kohlan and Desana Parsons played their first games of the year against the Falcons, starting in right and left field, respectively, as normal right fielder Courtney Howard was moved to shortstop after sophomore Emma Keider was slid over to third.

“That was a huge change,” Mike Keider said. “Courtney has the ability; she just doesn’t have the experience yet. Fountain Hills had really aggressive baserunners, too, which worked to a huge disadvantage when I have two new people in the infield who don’t know how to defend against that.”

Neither the Scorpions pitching nor their veteran players could compensate this time, as Emma Keider walked four Falcons over the first two innings, leading to a four-run second that even Aitken could not stop, as a doctor’s appointment delayed her arrival at the game until the third.
