Cris Paderas owns the Sedona Red Rock High School scoring record. The Scorpions girls team is one seed away from a state playoff berth.

senior gabrielle Simon, No. 32, shoots a jumper for Sedona Red Rock High School over a crowd of North Pointe Preparatory Academy defenders, including, from left, juniors Maryann Al-Shiteawi, Rhiannon Casselman, Megan Wilson and Jassmyn Markus in the Scorpions’ 66-16 home victory over North Pointe Prep on Jan. 28. Simon will be one of six Scorpions basketball players to be honored at senior night against Mingus Union High School beginning at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7.

These events are just a hint of things to come, said some of the outgoing SRRHS senior basketball players before their
5:30 p.m. home game, Friday, Feb. 7, against Mingus Union High School that concludes the regular season.

“If I could do anything over again, I’d want to have the last four years over,” said forward Khalie Barber, who has lettered four years for SRRHS girls basketball. “The freshmen are lucky to have four years with coaches like Jackie and Greg [Strickling] around, with all the time and the energy they’ve put into this program.”

Those head coaches of the girls and the boys teams have molded Scorpions hoops into state playoff contenders. The girls overcame a 61-39 loss at Camp Verde to squeak by Horizon Honors at home, 43-38, Tuesday, Feb. 4.

Barber said that after senior night, it will be the Marauders who will have to respect that.

Whenever the season for the Scorpions [13-14] finally ends, both Barber and fellow senior forward Gabrielle Simon agree they will miss the basketball experiences they’ve had.

“It’s going to be weird not going to practice,” Simon said. “I’ll just miss playing basketball.”
