In a week in which they had lost a tight, three-set match to Arizona’s top-ranked Division IV volleyball team, the Northwest Christian Crusaders, the Sedona Red Rock Scorpions also played the winless Sequoia Charter Stallions on Thursday, Oct. 3, in the SRRHS gymnasium.

Hannah Johnson goes high for a spike in the Scorpions game against Sequoia. The Scorpions [8-1] trifled with the Stallions [0-11] for the obligatory three sets, winning 3-0 [25-5, 25-10, 25-10] in a match that may not even have been that close.

The first set, in fact, lasted about as long as it takes to serve a volleyball 30 times, with Scorpions junior outside hitter DeVonne Ryter serving more than half of those, including several aces, to give Sedona a 22-2 lead.

A pair of kills by junior Hannah Johnson and an ace by junior Morgan Andrews mercifully ended the first set.

One positive aspect of the match was that it allowed Scorpions head coach John Parks to give more court time to players, such as Johnson and senior Kylie Capite, who are looking for more opportunities to show what they can do.

“It gives them the opportunity not just to play, but to earn more playing time,” Parks said. “And so even though it’s a slow game and not the same, I’m looking to see if they’re doing things the way we’re asking them to do them.

“So hopefully they take advantage of that.”
