The Sedona Swordfish swim team hosted a swim meet this past weekend where 494 swimmers competed from three different cities here in Arizona.

The meet was held at the Sedona Community Pool on Saturday, June 30.

Along with Sedona, Bullhead City and Kingman made the trip to compete as well.

“Overall, we did exactly what we wanted to do. Technique is very important for us, and we achieved that focus at every level,” Head Coach Erin Estes said.

The Swordfish may have finished last with 1,891 total team points, but they also have 104 less swimmers than the winner.

If you look at the average point total per swimmer, Sedona would have a whopping 16.16 points per swimmer.

Kingman would have 14.30 points per swimmer, and Bullhead City would have only 12.54 points per swimmer.

“Our team was outstanding on Saturday. Finishing last only means we are battling the numbers game with less swimmers competing,” Estes said.

One of the top performers for Sedona at the meet was 14-year-old Evan Decker, as he finished first in all of his events.

“Evan [Decker] is a competitor. He is a unique swimmer in that he is so young, yet he competes with swimmers older than himself,” Estes said.

His younger brother, Jacob Decker, 12, was outstanding as well, finishing first in all of his meets.

“Jacob [Decker] is all attitude. There is no stopping this kid,” Estes said.

Other Swordfish were outstanding as well, as six others recorded their personal bests in their event.

“This meet is a good foundation for everyone, as we stress technique. Everyone will get better because they all put so much work into their swimming,” Estes said.

Not only do the kids put in the effort, but their parents do as well.

“The meet ran smoothly thanks to all of my parents helping out. They do a great job,” Estes said.

Next up for the Swordfish will be the Fun in the Pines meet in Payson on Saturday, July 7.

The meet will begin at 8 a.m. and run to about noon.
