There’s nothing like a loss to knock the luster off a shiny new season, and while every team has the goal of going undefeated, few teams realistically believe it can happen.

Haley Holverson glides in her lane at the Sedona Community swimming pool. Holverson, who is a senior, is one of five Sedona swim team captains this season. The Sedona Red Rock High School swim team not only believes it can happen, recent history tells them its a distinct possibility.

The Sedona boys team has gone undefeated in dual meets for the last four years, and the girls team went undefeated last year. Although the boys team graduated some of its best swimmers, and one of its best returning swimmers, Colin Hurkett, is injured, coach A. Jay Bronson still expects them to be highly competitive.

“I don’t know if we’re going to win any state championships, but the one we have a shot at for the guys is the 200 free relay,” Bronson said. “They came in second last year by a hair, and with Colin out that might be a little more difficult, but that’s what we’re going to shoot for and see if we can make it.”

Hurkett, who is one of the boys team’s co-captains along with Nick Morgan, is trying to rehabilitate a torn labrum, and Bronson said he isn’t sure when the senior will return to the team.

“He’s one that I would normally be counting on, ”Bronson said, “but with him out as of right now, I’m looking at Tristan Decker, a junior who is one of our best sprinters ... and Nick Morgan.”
