The two-time defending 3A West region champions are going to have a tough go of it in 2010-2011 but the future is bright for the Sedona Red Rock High School girls basketball team.

Sophomore Sierra Hatler goes to the rim for a layup Friday, Nov. 19, in a scrimmage game against Miami High School. Hatler is a top returner this season for the Scorpions, which will have a young team this season.Having graduated West region MVP Katie Adams in May along with two-time first team All-Region performer Rita Clancy, the Scorpions are starting over.

“This is how high school goes,” first-year Sedona Head Coach Tina Hawes said. “You have a good group of kids that come through and do some special things, then they leave, and it’s up to the new kids to make their own mark.”

Sedona had two West region MVPs in the last two seasons in Adams and Breanne Cunningham in 2008-2009, which helped the Scorpions win more games in the West during their time than any other team in school history.

The Scorpions went 48-36 over the last three seasons and were an impressive 25-7 against West region opponents in the same time span.

Technically, the Scorpions won the regular season West title last season, but lost to Wickenburg High School in the 3A West Region Tournament championship game, 33-27.

After a close loss [45-41] the next week to Fountain Hills High School in the 3A conference state playoffs, the Scorpions wrapped up the 2009-2010 season with a 13-13 overall record.

Adams and Clancy contributed 30 of the team’s 44 points per game average, and that will be missed.

This season, Sedona returns several players from the 2009-2010 season, all of whom will have to step it up if the Scorpions are to be successful this year.

Sedona has only one senior on the squad this year with returning varsity letter winner Darlise Dogan looking to get solid minutes this season.

Seniors Miki Jovanovic and Chelsea Strong would have added to the senior class on the team this season. Jovanovic and her family moved to Phoenix and Strong reportedly did not come out for basketball.

Other top returners include junior Ashley Haas, a shooter who gives the Scorpions a threat from beyond the arc while junior Taylor Nolte is a decent shooter in her own right.

Sophomore Mary Kate Hafner also returns as a shooter for the Scorpions, giving Hawes and her squad plenty of options from outside.

Hafner and Nolte received little playing time in 2009-2010, but those around the organization expect their roles to increase this season.

Two sophomores return as well for the Scorpions in twin sisters Sierra and Tiana Hatler. Both Hatlers made the team as freshmen with Sierra Hatler getting a bit more playing time. Hatler eventually worked her way into a starting role and didn’t look back.

Top Newcomers

The Scorpions will be a very young and inexperienced team in 2010-2011 but the youth movement will pay off over the next few seasons.

Sophomore Taylor Gage has made the squad after spending all her time on the junior varsity as a freshman last season.

Despite Gage’s promise, there are a few freshmen getting all the attention in Scorpion camp this November.

Freshmen standouts Amber Rippy and Morgan Hawes look to push for a starting role, giving Tina Hawes one of the youngest backcourts in the state.

Both can shoot, drive to the basket and play stingy defense, making a strong case for the two freshmen to not only start this year, but for years to come.

The Schedule

After their solid performance in a scrimmage game Friday, Nov. 19, against visiting Miami High School, the Scorpions are ready to begin this year’s schedule.

Sedona will start the year at the Williams Invitational Tournament on Thursday,
Dec. 2. The tournament runs through Saturday, Dec. 4.

Sedona’s first regular season Arizona Interscholastic Association power point game will come Wednesday, Dec. 8, against Northwest Christian High School.

The Scorpions will return home Thursday, Dec. 9, to play host to Williams High School, a team Sedona beat two times last season.

Final Word

With all the young talent the Scorpions have this season it could be a long year for the girls in purple and silver, but it won’t be long before Sedona is back on top.
