Originally scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 16, the Coconino High School soccer match was cancelled and will not be made up this season according to Sedona Red Rock High School Athletic Director John Parks.

Sophomore Mykala Seresun looks to turn upfield in a match Dec. 14. Seresun has come on strong this season at the forward position for the Sedona Red Rock High School girls soccer team.Unfortunately for the Scorpion girls soccer team, the 1-0 loss to rival Mingus Union High School on Dec. 14 will leave a sour taste in their mouths for quite some time.

When the Scorpions take the field against Scottsdale Christian Academy on Thursday, Jan. 6, three-plus weeks, or 23 days to be exact, will have gone by.

“It’s tough to not play any games during the break, but we have practices set up and the girls will stay sharp. There are a few players missing having gone with their families for Christmas but everyone should be back in time to practice before we play come January,” fourth-year Sedona Head Coach Tom Cadigan said at practice Monday, Dec. 20.

The Scorpions have compiled an overall record of 4-1 this season but are a perfect 3-0 in the 1A-3A North region.

Wins within the region so far this season have come against Tempe Preparatory Academy [1-0] on Nov. 29, Phoenix Country Day School [6-0] on Dec. 2 and Veritas Preparatory Academy [8-0] on Dec. 9.

The Scorpions have outscored North region opponents 15-0 in the early going with Scottsdale Christian the only team yet to play against Sedona.

Senior Sarah Schlener dribbles past a Mingus Union High School defender Dec. 14. The Sedona Red Rock High School girls soccer team is currently 4-1 overall this season, including a perfect 3-0 in the 1A-3A North region.Sedona will play each of the aforementioned teams a second time before the state playoffs begin. If the Scorpions beat the Eagles in their first match back from break, it could be the first big step for Sedona toward a second straight North title.

Overall, Sedona has outscored its opponents 24-1, having given up the only goal to the defending 4A-II conference state champions in Mingus just last week.

Even though Sedona lost, the Scorpions dominated the match for nearly 79 of the 80 minutes played, allowing the Mingus goal in the 41st minute.

“It was a tough loss, but we’ll just get better and keep pushing forward,” Cadigan said.

Sedona is ranked No. 6 in the Arizona Interscholastic Association power point polls, which were released Monday, Dec. 20. Scottsdale Christian is ranked No. 7 with a 3-2 overall record this season.

Scheduled start time for the Sedona-Scottsdale Christian matchup Jan. 6 is set for 4 p.m.
