In one of the biggest matches of the season for the Sedona Red Rock High volleyball team, injuries, missed opportunities and execution problems doomed the Scorpions as they lost to Parker High on Thursday, Oct. 4, three games to one.

With the win, Parker takes sole possession of first place with a 6-0 region record, 19-6 overall.

“We had our chances but we didn’t execute well enough to win the match,” Sedona head coach John Parks said.

With the loss, Sedona’s record falls to 21-17 [5-3] on the season.

Parker came to play and dominated the Scorpions in game one, 25-10.

“The girls came out way too emotional in the first game,” Parks said.

In game two, Sedona kept it a little closer as they seemed to calm down a bit.

Unfortunately, Parker took advantage of a plethora of unforced errors by Sedona to win game two, 25-18.

The Scorpions committed a gaudy 22 hitting errors on the night to match with their 0.039 hitting percentage.

“I think our effort was there, but we just needed to put it together,” sophomore standout Shelby Brekke said.

Brekke had a solid effort against Parker, recording six kills and two solo blocks.

In game three Sedona showed some life and finally gave the fans something to cheer about.

The home crowd was wild as can be, realizing its team was making a run.

Spectators chanted and the football team dived to the floor every time Sedona got a kill.

The No. 1 [3A-conference] ranked Parker began to feel the pressure and mistakes were made on their part.

Sedona was in place to take a game from the Broncs, something they were unable to do earlier in the season at Parker.

With the crowd and the coaching staff behind them, the ladies got the final kill and won game three, 25-23.

Suddenly, Sedona was in it.

After taking a 18-15 lead in game four, all the momentum shifted to the purple and silver until something unfortunate happened.

While diving after a Parker attack, junior labero Hayley McCord performed a horrifying  face plant on the hard wood floor.

Play continued as she lay motionless on the ground.

Once the point was awarded, the positive air that filled the gym to the ceiling just seconds before was gone.

After 10 minutes, McCord was helped to her feet and walked off on her own power.

A slight concussion was the diagnoses and she is day-to-day, Parks said.

Meanwhile, there was still a game to be played.

Sedona seemed to lose interest and it took a few points before the Scorpions realized Parker had all the momentum back in their corner.

“There were position changes that needed to be made and we couldn’t adjust,” Parks said.

The Scorpions never recovered as Parker went on a 10-5 run to win the game and seal the victory, 25-23.

“It was tough to lose one of our best defenders. Hopefully she’ll be OK because she’s a big part of this team,” sophomore middle blocker Katie Adams said.

The Scorpions still have three games remaining on the schedule before the regional tournament.

If they play well, all they can do is finish second in the region, unless Parker has a monumental crash.

Next up, Sedona travels to second place Wickenburg High [10-8, 7-2] on Thursday, Oct. 11.

Game time is set for 6 p.m.
