While many teams in the state of Arizona took some time off this past weekend the boys basketball team at Sedona Red Rock High did not.

The Scorpions played in the Cake Chevrolet Shoot Out hosted by Winslow High this past weekend and came away with a respectable 2-2 record against solid competition.

“It was a little bumpy. We were up and down but we played well in the two games we won,” Sedona head coach Bob Murphy said.

No answer for Chinle

In the first game of a double header on Thursday, Nov. 29, Sedona was paired against Chinle High.

Chinle was tough on the boards and ran their offense well providing quality shots most of the game for the Wildcats.

Sedona was in the game after the first quarter of play having been down only 17-14 but a torrid shooting Wildcat bunch poured on 28 points in the second quarter to take a 45-31 lead at the break.

In the second half Sedona cut the lead down to six points on two different occasions but just couldn’t recover and lost, 74-62.

Senior Michael Krajnak scored a game-high 25 points to go along with his six steals, seven rebounds and three assists.

Chinle eventually went on to play in the championship game against Winslow and won the tournament title by one point, 61-60.

Scorpions score 70

A fan can count on one hand how many times the Scorpions have scored 70 points in the past three or four years, but the boys did it in Winslow in game two on Thursday, Nov. 29.

Snowflake High took a 20-11 lead going into the second quarter before Sedona caught fire and put up 22 points while only allowing five to take a 33-25 lead going into halftime.

The Scorpions had one of their better shooting days of the young season going 29-55 from the field for a blazing 53 percent.

“Tournaments are fun because you don’t know the teams you’re playing. You just go out, play and don’t think about it,” Murphy said.

Sedona continued the hot shooting and solid defense in the second half and won the game, 70-50.

Krajnak again led all scores with 25 points. He added eight rebounds, four assists and two steals as well.

Sophomore Kevin Cox scored 15 points on 7-10 shooting and led the Scorpions with three blocked shots.

No contest

If the Scorpions shot well the day before against Snowflake, this was ridiculous.

Sedona put together one of the best shooting games in school history shooting 58 percent from the floor and going 10-15 from behind the arc.

The Scorpions put up 24 points in the first quarter alone after hitting their first 14 shots from the field.

Blue Ridge High didn’t know what to do besides try and ride out the storm but the lightning that was the Sedona offense on this night never went away.

Sedona won the game, 68-54.

Krajnak dropped 32 points on 12-17 shooting including 6-7 from behind the three point line. He also added six steals and three assists.

Cox had a solid night as well scoring 10 points and adding seven rebounds.

What happened?

After two hot-shooting games in a row the Sedona Scorpions went as cold as the Flagstaff air shooting 36 percent against Greyhills High in the fifth-place game.

Sedona couldn’t keep up with the well-oiled machine that was the Greyhills offense as they lost, 58-45.

“We need to figure out how to win games when we’re not playing all that well,” Murphy said.

Junior guard Stephen Byrnes scored nine points and added four rebounds while junior Luke Dumyahn scored seven points and added nine rebounds.

An OK weekend

Murphy said Sedona will look to improve everyday but for now will take the 4-2 [0-0] record his team has begun the season with.

“We weren’t nearly as patient in our two losses as we were in our two wins but we are coming along,” Murphy said.

Sedona was in action against cross-valley rival Camp Verde High on Tuesday, Dec. 4.
