In volleyball, like in most sports, it’s not how you start; it’s how you finish.

Despite a slow start in the first set of their match against the Bradshaw Mountain Bears, the Sedona Red Rock Scorpions volleyball team gave a dominant performance in winning 3-0 [25-20, 25-10, 25-16] on Tuesday, Sept. 10, in their first home game of the season at the SRRHS gymnasium.

Scorpions junior Shamina Thode goes up for a left handed dink shot over two Bradshaw Mountain defenders while teammates line up defensively Tuesday, Sept. 10 at the RRHS gymnasium. The Scorpions used the serving and net play of sophomore Kendall Woellmer, the net play of juniors Shamina Thodé and DeVonne Ryter and the setting of senior Mallory Lamparter to overcome a 6-1 deficit and pull away for an easy win in the first set.

Lamparter, in particular, is proving that she possesses the steady hand the Scorpions need to orchestrate their arrival as a complete team in the young season.

“Mallory’s got a good way of keeping everybody level-headed out there, and keeping everybody on track and keeping them focused and not letting players get mad at themselves or down on themselves,” Scorpions coach John Parks said. “She’s good at keeping everybody up, keeping everybody positive, and you want that from your setter.”

Senior Morgan Hawes, who is the team’s co-captain along with Lamparter, is also very good, Parks said, at keeping the attitude positive among the players, which he added is critical to keeping the team’s performance consistent.
