What the future may hold for the Sedona boys basketball team is unknown.

Senior Martin Galvez looks for an opening to the basket in a scrimmage game Nov. 19. Galvez, who was recently named team captain of the Sedona Red Rock High School boys basketball team, should be an easy pick for 3A West region coaches this season when they nominate all-region players in February. The team lost six seniors, three of whom were starters, and expects to see new faces at the varsity level.

“I expect our boys to play hard this season. We lost six seniors to graduation last year and five of the six players coming back from last year have limited experience at the varsity level. It should be an interesting year,” first-year Head Coach Brian Bergner Jr. said.

Bergner, also a new addition to the varsity squad, takes over for former Head Coach Bob Murphy, and he has big plans for his new team.

“We’re going to change the way we play,” Bergner said. “The last three or four years we’ve been a walk-it-up [the court] type of team, but now, we’re going to get up and down, play pressure defense and shoot the ball when we’re open. It’s going to be an exciting brand of basketball.”

Bergner himself played for the Scorpions while he attended Sedona Red Rock High School. He graduated in 2001 and continued his basketball career for one year at Concordia University Wisconsin. While at Concordia he also worked as the student assistant basketball coach for the women’s program.

Prior to talking over as head coach, Bergner served as junior varsity coach for the Scorpions for six years. He also led the school’s girls softball program as head coach in 2008.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to be the head coach of the Sedona boys basketball program. I hope to continue the tradition of good basketball here at Sedona that began years ago,” Bergner said.
The boys ended their

2009-10 season with an 18-11 record and ranked No. 8 in Arizona Interscholastic Association power point standings. The team finished second in the 3A West region losing to Estrella Foothills in the championship game, 113-51.

The Scorpions lost in the first round of the state playoffs to No. 9 Holbrook High School, 69-91.

Three seniors and three juniors return to the floor this year for Bergner, including seniors Blake Baker, Troy Loparco and Martin Galvez, and juniors Bradley Cox, Chris Oestmann and J.R. Henry.

“Our players selected Martin Galvez as our team captain, which I believe was a good choice,” Bergner said. “Martin is a good player and a leader on and off the floor.

“I look for good things out of our other two seniors, Blake Barker and Troy Loparco. They both have a solid game and provide different things to this team that will make us successful.”

Newcomers to Bergner’s varsity squad include senior Taylor Webber, juniors Ashor Samano, Arley Leyva and Gabe Greenfield, and sophomores Graham McGilvray and Steven Sundberg.

The boys tip off the 2010-2011 season Thursday, Dec. 2, at the Winslow Invitational Tournament. Sedona plays Greyhills Academy High School in its first game.

Tip off is scheduled for 8 p.m. at Winslow High School.
