Although the Sedona Red Rock High School golf program is in rebuild mode, the Scorpions still have a few golfers who have been around the block and are looking to compete in 2011.

Sedona Head Coach Dennis Mobley believes this team will be interesting to watch with the young talent, but he isn’t sure how his Scorpions will fare this spring.

Over the summer, the Arizona Interscholastic Association realigned the schools, putting Sedona in Division III instead of the normal 3A conference they’ve known for nearly 10 years.

The Scorpions Golf Team is looking for a solid 2011 season. Shown, left to right, are Brooke Biermann, David Lugviel, Scotty Thompson, Gabe Greenfield, Alec Chapman, Brian Swartwout and Francisco Marin. The Sedona Red Rock High School golf program is in rebuild mode this season, but all the players are optimistic about their chances this spring.Division III is the only division that competes in the spring, with Divisions I and II playing in the fall.

Division III consists of 54 schools around Arizona and with no sectional meet at the end of the season, it’s going to be awfully tough for the Scorpions to qualify for state this season.

Despite the uphill battle Sedona faces in 2011, the Scorpions are optimistic about their chances.

“I’m excited to get the year going,” junior returner Gabe Greenfield said at practice Tuesday, March 1. “I don’t know how we’ll finish but I’m glad we’re all out here playing to compete.”

Greenfield is one of many top returners this season. Senior Scotty Thompson is the leader of the pack for Sedona this year, and should be the clear-cut No. 1 golfer this spring.

Sedona began its season at Estrella Foothills High School on Monday, Feb. 28, where Thompson shot a 47.

Although Thompson wasn’t happy with his performance, he vowed his scores would be better throughout the year.

Others returning include junior Danny Bunker who should be the No. 2 golfer this season for the Scorpions while senior Brook Biermann fights for the No. 3 spot.

Sedona has several other golfers that deserve recognition this season including seniors John Beeler and Emily Collins. Junior David Lugviel will be looking to break the top five this season while there are plenty of sophomores looking to do the same.

Sedona has five sophomores out this year with Conner Kriegel, Francisco Marin, Ben Murray, Brian Swartwout and Kris Zarcone leading the way.

The Scorpions had one freshman come out for golf this season as well in Alec Chapman.

Sedona was in action again Thursday, March 3, traveling to Winslow High School. Results were unavailable at press time.

Next up, Sedona will travel south to play Phoenix Christian High School on Tuesday, March 8. Tee time is set for 3 p.m.
