With only two Sedona Red Rock High School golfers qualifying for state this past week, the Scorpions were unable to finish with an official team score at the 36-hole 3A conference state golf championships in Snowflake.

“It’s great we got to send two guys to the state meet. Obviously our goal is to be represented as a whole, but we have some young guys that are just learning the game,” first-year Sedona Head Coach Steve Livingstone said.

Junior Scotty Thompson finished 44th overall in the 68-player field with a 206 [+62] at the Snowflake Community Golf Course on Monday, May 10, and Tuesday, May 11.

Thompson finished 28 over par on Monday with a 100, then was 34 over with a 106 on Tuesday to put him in 44th place.

danny_bunkerSophomore Danny Bunker wasn’t half bad Monday, shooting a 94 [+22] but then suffered a case of the shanks Tuesday to shoot a 132 [+50] for a 226 [+72] total stroke score, putting him in 53rd place overall.

Just taking a look at the top three teams in the state tournament this week, it’s easy to see why they finished as high as they did since the course used for state is their home course.

Snowflake High School eventually claimed the team state championship with a 656 while Payson High School came in second with a 706 and Show Low High School was third with a 753.

Safford High School took fourth overall, the first school not located in the White Mountains to place, shooting a 773 while Estrella Foothills High School wrapped up the top five with a 784.

Kyle Jones of Snowflake was the individual state champion, shooting 2-under par on day one [70] to help him win the state championship by 14 strokes [149].

Snowflake teammate Parker McDonald took second overall with a 163 [+19] while Tyler Apps of Payson was third with a 164 [+20].

Dillon Washburn of Blue Ridge High School took fourth overall with a 167 [+23] and Hayes Dupree of River Valley High School wrapped up the top five, tieing for fourth overall with a 167 [+23].

The Scorpions will take a few weeks off for summer break before teeing it up again in the fall in order to get ready for spring.

With the young squad Sedona sported this year including Bunker, Zac Johnson and Gabe Greenfield, the Scorpions have a very bright future and may be ready to win in 2011.
