Sedona Parks and Recreation’s adult softball league split into two tiers Thursday, July 17.

Juan Gonzalez, left, of the Boynton Base Invaders attempts to evade the tag of Night Ballers third baseman Brian Walker. The Invaders lost to Red Rocks Rotary but beat the Night Ballers, 8-6, in a doubleheader Thursday, July 24.

While A Day in the West routed Rokzoo Bucket List 14-4 to remain perfect through eight games, Red Rocks Rotary bounced back from two losses in a row to sweep its doubleheader, keep pace with third place and surge a game-and-a-half ahead of the fifth and final above-.500 team, the Boynton Base Invaders, after a 6-3 win at Posse Grounds Park.

“You don’t want to play A Day in the West, but I think anybody else, we can play with,” Invaders head coach and catcher Dave Schmidt said. “There are quite a few decent teams that play neck for neck. Besides L’Auberge [de Sedona], because of the hotel rivalry, we always want to beat Los Illegals.”

The Invaders, known until this summer as Enchantment Resort, will have to be content with a win over the Mighty Ducks — 12-11 winners July 17 over winless Another Team — and a loss to Los Illegals going into the playoffs.

Still, six Illegals showed up on their bye week to watch the Invaders eke out an 8-6 win July 17 over the Night Ballers.

“They were scouting us,” said Schmidt, whose No. 5 hitter in his lineup, utility infielder Mo Zorrilla, is son to Los Illegals head coach and pitcher Mauro Trahin Sr. “We played them pretty well last time, until they had one of those five-run innings.”
