Halfway through their inaugural season, the Sedona FC Strikers [0-6] and head coach Manny Arias are confronting the reality of life in women’s semi-professional soccer.

Jessica Barton, right, of the FC Strikers, readies herself to head the ball in competition with Seattle Sounders forward Ifeoma Onumonu on Saturday, May 31, at Sedona Red Rock High School.

Players have come and gone. Injuries have taken their toll. Home attendance is sporadic.

On Thursday, June 19, the Strikers will practice on their third different field of the season, as Arias will run morning and afternoon sessions on the turf of Bright Field at Mingus Union High School.

“It’s a very different game, practicing on grass and playing on turf,” he said. “If you want to practice over at [Sedona] Red Rock High School, it’s $150 an hour. I wish they would give us a chance to practice over there, but we already spend a lot of money for the games.”

Each home game, in fact, has cost $1,200 for use of the SRRHS field, Arias said.

“It’s very much cheaper at Mingus,” he said. “They work with us.”
