Some bent over in exhaustion. Others cheered and hugged their parents.

But after a season in which the Sedona Red Rock High School girls soccer team [4-12] was ravaged by injuries, all of the Scorpions’ eight seniors received a standing ovation from the crowd after their last game, a 2-0 loss to Scottsdale Christian Academy on Wednesday, Jan. 29.

“This was the first year we actually bonded as a team,” said senior Maya Rice after the game. “No one dislikes each other. There’s no drama.”

Rice and captain Anna Watson threatened the Scottsdale Christian Academy zone with shots on goal throughout the game, but they were consistently turned away by the Eagles’ freshman goalkeeper Grace Schreyer. Senior Danesh Naghibzad and junior Tatum Doyle punched in goals early in the first half to secure the victory, a 9-3 record and their first-ever berth in the state tournament, for the Eagles.
