With field conditions good enough to host a farm of pigs instead of a soccer match, the Sedona Red Rock High School boys soccer team struggled against South Pointe High School in a 6-0 loss Monday, Dec. 6.

Senior Miguel Marcelino, No. 15, tries to steal the ball from a Phoenix Christian High School player Thursday, Dec. 2.It is the first loss of the season for the Scorpions, who won their first two matches against North Pointe Preparatory [5-2] and Phoenix Christian Academy [2-1].

“The other team was much hungrier than we were,” first-year Sedona Head Coach Cindy Hauserman said after the match Monday. “It seemed we just didn’t bring it today and our confidence was low.”

Sedona managed only five shots against South Pointe the entire match Monday in Phoenix, making it easy for the Griffins to put plenty of pressure offensively on the Scorpions.

South Pointe found its way through Sedona’s usually stingy defense in the first half, scoring three quick goals to take a 3-0 lead before the break. The Scorpions surrendered three goals altogether in the first two matches of play to begin the season.

The Sedona Red Rock High School boys soccer team lost to South Pointe High School on Monday, Dec. 6, 6-0.Junior goalkeeper Kyle DeTar allowed five goals on seven shots and recorded two saves but was pulled midway through the second half by Hauserman, who substituted sophomore backup goalkeeper Alberto Sotelo.

Sotelo recorded four saves and allowed only one goal when South Pointe officially sealed the deal late in the second half, making it a 6-0 final.

“We just lost confidence early. South Pointe is a really good team,” Hauserman said.

With the loss, Sedona drops its record to 2-1 [2-1, 1A-3A North] overall this season but will get a chance to rebound quickly.

The Scorpions are scheduled Wednesday, Dec. 8, to welcome Bourgade Catholic High School. Sedona and Bourgade will get under way at 4 p.m.
