Don’t look now, but the best Division III golf teams have some Scorpions on their tails.

Junior Savanah Cooper practices her putting Thursday, May 1, at Oakcreek Country Club for the Sedona Red Rock High School golf team. Cooper will be counted on to overcome a recurring wrist injury at the Division III state tournament beginning Friday, May 16, at Antelope Hills Golf Course in Prescott.

With a 164 over the front nine holes of the north Antelope Hills Golf Course on Tuesday, May 6, the Sedona Red Rock High School “purple varsity,” as head coach Dennis Mobley refers to his top five golfers, not only defeated Camp Verde and Wickenburg high schools in its final dual meet of the spring but also shot the 10th qualifying round of the season on the course that will decide the Division III state champion Saturday, May 17.

“In effect, we have double-made State,” Mobley said. “We have no beginners on our ten-person squad. They are all solid varsity high school golfers.”

Sophomore Keagan Webster tied Camp Verde High School junior Joel Beauty with a match-low 82 over 18 holes in gusty Prescott conditions – including, by Mobley’s estimation, winds from 25 to 40 mph, which played havoc with tournament preparation on fairways already lined with cottonwood trees.

“It was constantly ugly,” said assistant coach Monty Cooper. “On drives, the balls would stop, and the wind would keep moving them. That’s how crazy it was.”
