The Sedona Red Rock High golf team ended its regional championship season last week by finishing in fourth place at the AIA 3A State Golf Championships in Flagstaff.

The event was held at the Continental Country Club golf courses on May 7 and May 8.

The Scorpions had two golfers place in the individual top five, and another placed as high as 15.

“I think we did well,” Head Coach Dennis Mobley said.

Senior Brian DeWulf played exceptionally well and set the tone early for the Scorpions, shooting a 73.

“Brian [DeWulf] put two well-played days together,” Mobley said.

The 73 was good enough to tie him for first place in the state tournament after one day of action.

“Brian [DeWulf] played a lot better than I expected, and a lot better than I think he expected,” Mobley said.

On the second day, DeWulf was feeling it again, this time recording a 78.

“The course is rather easy, my drives were straight and long, and that helped,” DeWulf said.

The effort by DeWulf was outstanding, but if you have ever stubbed your toe on the couch at home, you might know what he felt after it was all over.

A state tournament score of 151 was not enough, as he finished four strokes behind the leader and state champion, Sarah Freeman, from Estrella Foothills High.

“I went in with good thoughts and tried to make the best of it, and I did. I played fairly well overall, and it was my best tournament of the year,” DeWulf said.

DeWulf was not the only Scorpions golfer who came to play.

Junior foreign exchange student Juan Pablo Cabellero-Gonzalez finished with a 155 tournament score, good enough for fifth place overall.

“Juan [Gonzalez] played like he usually does,” Mobley said.

Gonzalez shot a 78 on day one and a consistent 77 on day two.

“Juan [Gonzalez] had a little trouble sometimes with putting, but he put that aside and played well,” Mobley said.

Since DeWulf and Gonzalez finished in second and fifth, respectfully, both were awarded first team all-state.

The top five golfers receive the award, while the 6-10 spots are named to second team all-state.

“It’s quite an accomplishment,” Mobley said.

Speaking of accomplishments, senior Stefanie Fisher finished 15th overall with a 163 for the tournament.

“Stefanie [Fisher] played very well,” Mobley said.

Not only did she finish 15th, but her efforts placed her in some pretty impressive

company.

She recorded the best finish for a woman golfer in SRRHS state tournament history.

“I had a great time. It was my last year and I wanted to live it up,” Fisher said.

Fisher will look to continue her golf career, signing a letter of intent to play golf for the Northern Arizona University Lumberjacks.

“I’m excited to move on to NAU and play golf. It will be the beginning of a new life,” Fisher said.

State champ Sarah Freeman from EFHS will also join Fisher at NAU as she signed a letter of intent to play golf for the Lumberjacks as well.

Other Scorpions placed in the field. Junior Stadler Ho finished in 56th place with a disappointing 189. Freshman Rob Helmkamp shot a 96 and sophomore Brenden Biermann shot a 95 for a total of 191, good enough for 61st.

All in all, the Scorpions had a great season. They won the regional championship, placed fourth in state and put a new record in the books with the best score by a female golfer in SRRHS history.

That, my friends, is quite an accomplishment.
