Juniors Paulina Lasia and Keely Miller swept their singles and doubles matches Monday, March 31, to help the Sedona Red Rock High School girls tennis team end a two-match losing streak and down Bourgade Catholic High School, 5-4.

sophomores sophia hermosillo, left, and Foo Robeson prepare to return a center-court shot in their No. 3 doubles match for Sedona Red Rock High School against Bourgade Catholic High School on Monday, March 31.

“It was a hard-fought victory that takes some of the sting out of the last two losses,” boys tennis head coach Duane Edwards said.

The Scorpions [3-2] used a power game close to the net on a windy day to edge the Golden Eagles [2-4], as Edwards and assistant coach Phil Kovacs kept the team focused with head girls coach Carla Heckrodt attending to family and unavailable.

“Now we’re getting to the point where we can see who can play with each other,” Kovacs said. “And then make them believe it.”

The Scorpions rebounded from losses Thursday, March 27, at Flagstaff High School and a 8-1 home loss Saturday, March 29, against Page High School, in spite of getting balls caught in the blustery weather. Gusts of wind down the red rocks played havoc with both teams’ high returns, blowing balls hit high off the rackets off the courts.

“Is it always this windy?” shivering Bourgade senior Julie Mattes asked during her 8-6 doubles loss to Miller and senior Sarah Grover.

“Not usually,” Grover replied. “Just today.”
