Wanted: Sedona Red Rock High School students. Must like to play soccer.

That is the ad head coach Juan Carlos Aguilar would like to put into the Sedona Red Rock News after his girls soccer team [4-8] dropped their second straight game, 4-0 to Mingus at SRRHS on Wednesday, Jan. 22.

Senior co-captain Tatiana Chonis, No. 16, tries to clear the Sedona Red Rock High School zone under pressure from Mingus Union High School sophomores Sarah Van Kirk, No. 12, and Gabrielle MaKuch during the second half of the girls soccer team’s 4-0 loss to the Marauders on Wednesday, Jan. 22.“With only nine available players, we need experience,” he said following a loss in which all of his junior varsity players  were pressed into service and seniors Anna Watson and goalkeeper Chelsea Heineck had to play all 80 minutes in spite of a sprained ankle and injured back, respectively. “We’ll keep working hard on our passing and trying to recover our injured players. That’s all we can do.”

But Aguilar did not want to take anything away from the performance of the Marauders [8-8-1], who improved to 5-1 in sectional play and maintained a hold on the No. 7 seed for the Division III state playoffs beginning Tuesday, Feb. 4.

“I’m not going to make excuses, I’m not going to blame it on injuries,” he said. “We just have to recognize that the other team was better.”
