Big Park Community School volleyball player Kendall Woellmer has trouble getting the ball over the net during the school’s 2-0 win over rival West Sedona School on Thursday, Oct. 14. The perfect season is almost complete for the Big Park Community School volleyball team.

On Thursday, Oct. 14, the Coyotes traveled to crosstown rival West Sedona School and despite a first game scare, came away with a 2-0 victory.

West Sedona came out firing, recording 10 ace serves Thursday, but Big Park rallied to stave off the Wildcats to win game one, 25-21.

Game two was much easier for the Coyotes as they won 25-15 to take the match, 2-0.

“West Sedona started pretty good. I think the girls were a little nervous ... it’s a rivalry game so it’s expected,” first-year Big Park Head Coach Kerry Burkhart said after the match Thursday.

Big Park committed only five ball-handling errors and seven hitting errors on the night in the victory.

Leading the way for the Coyotes was Jillian Ziebellz who recorded 12 assists, two kills and four ace serves.

Samantha Burkhart led all players with six kills and had two digs and one ace serve while McKenna Woodford had five kills and two ace serves.

McKenna Woodford spikes the ball for one of her five kills during Big Park Community School’s volleyball game against West Sedona School. Hannah Johnson also pitched in, recording four ace serves, one kill and two assists.

With the victory, Big Park improves to a perfect 10-0 this season. Every win for the Coyotes has been of the sweep variety except for one against these very same Wildcats on Sept. 23.

West Sedona is the only team to take a game from the Coyotes, who are an impressive 20-1 in games this season.

The Coyotes were in action again Tuesday, Oct. 19, as they played host to Clarkdale-Jerome School in the season finale. Results were unavailable at press time.

Next up, the Small Schools Championships are scheduled to take place Friday, Oct. 22, and Saturday, Oct. 23, at Big Park.

“I think we’re in the perfect position. We’ve played well this season and we get to host the tournament ... that’s all you can ask for as a coach,” Burkhart said.
