Are local or national elections more important?

We’ve all agreed for years that Age has been redefined. Forty became the new thirty; Fifty the new forty. Over the last ten years, it has grown even wider. Look around you. Of course I don’t speak for everyone, however more people are enjoying life longer, hardly anyone smokes cigarettes anymore, we’re staying fit, and being active outdoors. People maturing still desire style, to look their best, to have fun and continue contributing their personal genius.

Many in their fifties now seem in their 30s, more of those in their sixties seem in their forties, people 70 plus seem in their fifties, and from where I stand, the view is now that those in their nineties seem in their sixties. You might agree.

For those of you in your twenties or younger, you may not have lived enough years to have noticed this phenomenon occur and likely, anyone over 25 may seem ancient to you anyway. That’s its own phenomenon from your age perspective. Always has been. Until we add more years to our twenties we think we know everything and are the answer to the future. You can be the drivers of the future, indeed, yet the accumulated insights to guide, ground and steer the creativity and inventions of youth come from the elder wisdom keepers.

With the lengthened youthfulness of our mature population, no longer have grandmother and grandfather completely moved over for the younger generation. In fact baby boomers still rule, and that includes those nearly 70. They still have buying power, so if you look closely, the television commercials are gearing to the more mature, as are the TV shows too.

Snooki and JWoww emotionally matured so their youthful draw is seeing its fading glimmer. There’s no more Melrose Place or The Hills. We are watching Oprah, who will turn 60 next year. The cast of Friends are in various shows years later; Lisa Kudrow will be 50 in July. Fran Drescher, turning 56, has her own show again, and no one can deny that Betty White may be the hottest ticket in town. She just turned 91 and is more active than probably you and I both. She’s playing along with her solid 50, 60 and 70 somethings cast in Hot in Cleveland, and her second show features those closer to her age! Viewers are addicted to housewives who are far from young chickens. Clint Eastwood is still a money-making ticket, turning 83 in May.

So what is twenty? We can’t say it’s the new 10, or 15 either. I’ll say age starts turning back the clock at 39. What do you think? If you’re 55 or over, you probably agree you’re not what your mother, father or grandparents were. You’re still beatniks and hippies from the 60s and 70s.

If you’re younger than that, you may be similar to your elders, however, emulating that iconic age of the hippie generation and living with the consciousness of embracing your uniqueness versus fitting in, and roaming for the adventure of uncovering the many facets of yourself, and seeing the world, versus living in the same neighborhood as your family all of your life.

May you enjoy each day on your journey, remembering that the path is longer and wider in this day and age. Savor every birthday and every age, knowing we become finer like wine. The anniversary of my birth is this Thursday, February 7th. Happy Birthday to Me! It just keeps getting better!
