Election coverage will not include endorsement letters

Our coverage of the Sedona Fire District Governing Board recall election officially began last week with profiles and essays, and so did the steady stream of letters to the editor endorsing candidates.

Per our election policy, which we’ve used for years, we will not publish letters to the editor endorsing or specifically naming candidates for office.

We will, however, publish letters about campaign issues.

Are you worried about response times, budget numbers or the infamous RSM McGladrey audit?

We invite you to write to us about policies, figures and what you want see as the future of SFD.

We won’t publish the letter if it includes names of any candidates.

We will remain neutral in our coverage from the candidate essays and profiles to the Opinion page.

Our goal and role as a newspaper is to present facts about each of the candidates and their opinions on important issues in a fair and balanced manner.

Coverage started with incumbent Phyllis Erick and her challenger, Corrie Cooperman.

This week, we bring you Chairman Dave Blauert and challenger Diane Schoen.

Justin Paffrath, also challenging Blauert as part of a three-candidate slate, will be featured next Wednesday, April 25.

Challenger Nazih Hazime’s profile and essay will appear April 25 as well.

Hazime is challenging incumbent Charles Christensen, who won’t be included in our candidate coverage because he failed to meet the deadline outlined to candidates verbally and in a letter mailed to the addresses they listed on their campaign forms.

Christensen is running on a three-candidate slate with Erick and Paffrath.

Voters recalled three candidates, Blauert, Erick and Christensen, late last year.

Each candidate is paired with his or her challengers in what is essentially three separate races.

Voters will be asked to vote for one person in each of the races.

Yavapai County is conducting the election by mail-in ballot. Registered voters in the Sedona Fire District can expect ballots to arrive the week of Monday, April 23. They must be returned by Tuesday, May 15, to be counted.
