Congratulations MUHS Girls Soccer and more Print E-mail

Before I dive into covering the spring sports here in the Verde Valley, I thought it would be prudent to congratulate all the high school teams that did well this winter.

For my “team of the year” vote, I would have to choose the Mingus Union High School girls soccer team.

From beginning to end the Marauders were the best soccer team at the 4A-II conference level, and maybe even better than that.

Who you got in the Super Bowl? Print E-mail

In continuing my good-natured “who you got?” columns like the previous two on the college bowl season, I’ve decided next in line will be Super Bowl XLIV coming this Sunday, Feb. 7, to a television near you.

Of course, it’s safe to say, most Verde Valley residents won’t be making the 2,364-mile trek to Miami, come this weekend, so I’ve decided to not only ask the football coaches at our local high schools but their athletic directors and principals as well to make it more entertaining.

Going 12-7 isn't half bad Print E-mail

For all the fun-loving “you’re crazy” and “how can you pick that team?” rants I received from the front office here at Larson Newspapers on my Bowl Madness picks, I would have to say 12-7 isn’t half bad.

Able to scratch out a victory over three head football coaches in the Verde Valley doesn’t mean all that much, except for pure bragging rights I can carry proudly until next season when I begin covering high school football in August.

Luke Steege [Camp Verde High School] and ex-head football coach Rob Lezcano [Sedona Red Rock High School] finished only one game back at 11-8, while Bob Young [Mingus Union High School] was 9-10.
