SFD: Tax increase needed

Imagine a community where emergency calls are delayed due to lack of resources, safety equipment is not updated and fire trucks break down en route to calls because there were not enough funds to maintain them.

Engineer Jeff Scalf talks about maintenance issues at Sedona Fire District Station No.1 on Tuesday, March 19.Sedona Fire District Fire Chief Kris Kazian does not want that scenario for this area. He wants the community to be safe and for tourists to feel secure in the belief the Sedona area has an exceptional emergency response team to rescue them if they find themselves stranded on a hiking trail or in an accident.

Funding is critical to this endeavor, which is why SFD is doing all it can to work within a strained budget and figure out a plan that will prevent reducing valuable services, Kazian said.

For the full story, see the Friday, March 22, edition of the Sedona Red Rock News.

The article says - "Imagine a community where....". Imagination is one thing, facts are another. I used to live in a small town with a larger population than Sedona. They had two fire stations and did not appear to be lacking in their abilities to operate. And, by the way, the fire fighters were paid a lot less than here.

What strained services? What is the TOTAL budget for the county? We are all worn out by the first responders, fire, police teachers etc. always on the chopping block while other areas or pet projects go untouched. If you want to plea - give us ALL the facts,

Check into SFD wages. My bet is you will see the highest paid people in the State. SFD is a victim of its own demise.

This is the common boiler-plate mantra we hear anytime the public service sector has to tighten the belt a notch or two. We need to hire an independent "auditor" to evaluate the SFD # of calls for service and the budget demands before we rubber-stamp any tax increases. I cannot see one example where there is a budget shortfall in this sleepy hollow.
