Sarah Gallenbergers Gretsch guitar-Sedona boasts its fair share of talented musicians, artistic souls who often inspire others to pursue music on their own; however, some people might be a little intimidated by the thought of taking on a new instrument.

Craig Coffman wants to help those very people overcome the seemingly Herculean task of learning to play the guitar, and he’s created a single-use class to tackle the instruction issue.

Interested parties should check out “Instant Guitar for Hopelessly Busy People,” a workshop Coffman is holding at the Sedona Teen Center at Posse Grounds Park on Thursday, July 25, from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

“In just a few hours you can learn enough about playing the guitar to give you years of musical enjoyment,” the Sedona Parks and Recreation Department stated in a press release. “This crash course will teach you some basic chords and get you playing along with your favorite songs right away.”

The term “crash course” definitely fits the bill, according to Coffman, who said that in the short time he will cover the basics of tuning, along with three chords that the students can then practice with and expand upon.

“Some people are just, ‘Woo-hoo, I got my three chords,’ and are happy with that,” he said.

Other topics to be covered include basic strumming patterns, what to avoid when buying a guitar and how to play along with basic songs.

Coffman added that the biggest hurdle for beginners is usually the pain of holding down strings with their inexperienced, callus-free fingers, but he has a quick solution for that ....
