Only 32 watercolors by 22 different artists made the cut to be included in the upcoming Northern Arizona Watercolor Society’s 14th annual Members’ Spring Exhibition.

The show employed Dick Phillips, a member of “Who’s Who in American Art” as juror of the selections and awards, and features artists from Sedona, Cottonwood, Camp Verde and Flagstaff, as well as from throughout other areas of Arizona.

Phillips is a full-time professional artist who studied with California artists Robert E. Wood and Milford Zornes, and whose work has received major awards in national and regional juried competitions.…

Empire Companies, the developer of the unfinished Mountain Gate subdivision in Clarkdale, filled for bankruptcy April 25, according to Riverside Divisional Office of U.S. Bankruptcy court in California.

Construction on the community halted months ago, and residents waited to hear from Empire, who appeared to have disappeared. Unpaved streets and unfinished lots surround the area of the development Empire completed before calling it quits.

“I told my wife that at least there are lots of safe, empty streets for our kids to ride their bikes on,” Mountain Gate resident David Gordon said.…

Forbidden by ancient custom to sing certain songs that belonged only to the men of her tribe, Delores Plunkett watched as those songs were extinguished, taken to the grave by the diabetes and the alcohol that claimed their singers.

A member of the Yavapai-Apache Nation, Plunkett mourned this loss, and as much, the loss of that part of her tribe’s traditions among the children.

“My father’s sons died before he did,” Plunkett said. “He should have taught me the songs, but he never did.”…
