Citing recent reports of two sexual assaults in the Sedona area — one in Oak Creek Canyon, the other on Coffee Pot Drive — local martial arts instructor Giuseppe Medlin put on a self-defense class aimed at women on Wednesday, Jan. 22, at a fitness studio in West Sedona.Giuseppe Medlin, a sixth-degree black belt master, shows Emily Newmann simple self-defense techniques that do not require intensive conditioning on Wednesday, Jan. 22. The class was geared towards women’s self-defense.

Medlin, a sixth-degree black belt and founder of the Academy of Martial Arts for Self-Realization, put together a two-hour course for people with no background in martial arts, focusing on quick techniques that require no conditioning.

Techniques covered included vital strikes, defense against knives, use of “domestic” weapons — keys, pens, other everyday objects — and the use of loud, verbal warnings.
