Artist Maleita Wise visited Sedona Charter School on Friday, May 16, to work with seventh-grade students on stamps and printmaking.Maleita Wise teaches Ana Stecklein, Kamila Doran, Drew Maguire and Noadiah Abedon, from left, how to make stamps with various tools, on Friday, May 16, at Sedona Charter School for the Artist in the Classroom series, which educates children with real world artists and techniques to better their creativity. The program is funded by the city of Sedona.

Wise showed the students that even rubber erasers can be carved to create patterns that reproduce with ink on paper, and gave them a variety of examples of stamps that can be made using hobby knives and linoleum carving tools.

Students started with their own pink rubber erasers, and were urged to start simple.

“This is a new thing, so don’t be afraid to ask for help,” Wise said. “You really want to do a simple, simple design. I’ll tell you, I taught some adults, and this lady wanted to do this dove holding a branch. I could not talk her out of it, and it didn’t work. It was just too detailed.”
