With a victory over weeds, Vibrant Sedona founder Matthew Turner unleashes his environmentalism on other pollutants with Green Sedona.

Green Sedona is Turner’s latest endeavor, which picks up where Vibrant Sedona leaves off.

Turner said Green Sedona wants the city to address environmental issues plaguing all parts of the globe.

“I’m working with them to make Sedona a model city for the country,” Turner said.

After Turner and Vibrant Sedona’s victory over chemical herbicide use along Hwy. 89A in West Sedona in March, Turner decided to broaden the scope.

On Tuesday, June 26, Green Sedona will present ideas to Sedona City Council on how to ensure sustainability within the community.

Green business awards are one idea the group has. With the city’s help, Turner said awards could be given to sustainable businesses each year.

City Manager Eric Levitt said he supports Green Sedona’s concept, but doesn’t feel the city should become a sponsor.

“It’s essentially Green Sedona’s program,” Levitt said.

Green Sedona volunteers developed the program and Levitt said he thinks they should be in charge.

“I think they should kick off the program,” Levitt said.

Levitt said he does recommend City Council support the effort.

“It’s something that’s important,” Levitt said.

Council will ultimately decide whether the city supports or sponsors the program June 26.

Green Sedona isn’t stopping with Sedona on its sustainability crusade, according to Turner.

Dialogue with the mayor of Tacate, Mexico, could result in a similar program starting in the border city.

Turner said the group hopes cities across the world adopt similar green policies to encourage sustainability.

“We’d like everyone to jump on the bandwagon,” Turner said.
