rde Valley Pride and Human & Equal Rights Organizers — HERO — hosted a presentation on Thursday, July 24, at the Church of the Red Rocks.Kelley Sneed-Dupps, HERO lead trainer, gives a presentation on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning/queer history to members of PFLAG Sedona and Sedona-Verde Valley Pride at the Church of the Red Rocks. The event was part of HERO’s 10-day Equality Walk to raise awareness for LGBTQ rights in Arizona.

The event marked the end of the Sedona leg of HERO’s seventh annual Equality Walk, a 10-day, 102-mile trek across the state of Arizona to raise awareness for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning/queer rights.

Volunteer walkers take part in the event, walking one mile for every year that Arizona has been a state without what the groups calls full equality; HERO lead trainer Kelley Sneed-Dupps spoke of the need to make a statement through action.

“They do that because it’s crazy, right? It’s crazy to walk 102 miles anywhere, let alone in the Arizona desert, let alone in July,” Dupps said. “But it’s also crazy to live in a state where you can be fired for being gay, you can be openly fired for being gender-non-conforming, for gender expression and these are things that we want to start conversations about.”
