Jared Silverman has lived on and off in Sedona for a number of years, and in that time he has furthered his own education while traveling to Scotland.Jared Silverman takes a break from getting some work done on his laptop at a café in West Sedona on Wednesday, June 25. Silverman currently works double duty, teaching at Prescott College while bartending in Sedona.

“I did a master’s program there in the history and philosophy of psychiatry,” Silverman said. “I actually graduated with distinction.”

Currently an adjunct professor at Prescott College, Silverman is finding himself enjoying doing extra work in the bar and restaurant industry in Sedona.

“I teach at Prescott College, in the psychology department and the gender studies program,” he said. “And then I also work up here, bartending and serving.”

For him, psychology offers an opportunity to explore answers to questions, but with a hard scientific approach.

“The thing about psychology is that the field of it kind of asks all of the fundamental questions about life,” he said. “Even more so than philosophy, because philosophy tends to get really abstract and metaphysical, and psychology kind of rides that line ... especially with all of the neuroscience studies today and all the questions we have, like ‘Who are we?’ — psychology is asking all of those questions."
