Fire education for children has come a long ways since the days of stop, drop and roll.Sedona Fire District engineer Rodrigo Sanchez explains to first graders the role of firefighters as community helpers. Sanchez described the difference between station wear and protective turnout gear worn by firefighters when fighting fire and when responding to car crashes. Firefighter Gary Davis demonstrates that only with the proper protective gear is he ready to fight fire and help them in an emergency. The message aims to familiarize children with the gear firefighters use, which might otherwise be scary to children during an emergency.

Recently, Sedona Fire District’s Community Risk Management Division partnered with the area’s three elementary schools — Big Park Community School, Sedona Charter School and West Sedona School — to launch its Fire & Life-Safety and Injury Prevention curriculum targeting elementary students.

“As a result of looking at model fire prevention programs throughout the nation, we developed a program that will meet the needs of our schools in a measurable way,” said District Fire Inspector Kevin Sullivan, who coordinates public education efforts.
