SFD Chief Kris KazianAfter a little blood, lots of sweat and a few tears, the Sedona Fire District’s newest fire station has finally broken ground.

Station 6 — which will be located on State Route 89A near Chapel Road — officially broke ground on Friday, July 12, with more than 100 invited guests looking on.
“Today is a day many of you thought would never come,” SFD Fire Chief Kris Kazian said.

The project has been seven years in the making and has seen several chiefs, Governing Board members and subcommittees during that time. SFD Governing Board Chairman Ty Montgomery — who referred to his first two years on the board as a roller coaster — said that despite criticism of the project from some, the positive comments he’s received far outweigh the negative reception.

“A quicker response will save lives,” he said. “This is a win-win all around.”

Bids for the project began on June 5, with the low bid of $1.944 million submitted by Phoenix-based Danson Construction.

Including a 6 percent contingency plan [in case additional funding is needed], as well as an array of additions such as landscaping, blinds and kitchen and laundry equipment, the board approved a loan for $2.25 million with Zions First National Bank. The loan is for 2.9 percent interest over 10 years and during that time the fire district will pay $343,000 in interest. Kazian said they considered a 15-year loan, but the interest would have tallied nearly $600,000 in additional charges.

Need to know what is going on while we travel.

If the fire station is on 89a it's going to be a long way from Chapel Road.
