Sedona Charter School’s chess club competed in the Arizona State Scholastic Chess Championships at Flagstaff High School on Saturday and Sunday, April 12 and 13, placing eighth in the state in the grade 7-9 division.Killian Black, George Black, Saydrin DeMayo, Forrest Hartley and Kai Zimmerman, from left, pose with their trophy at the Arizona State Scholastic Chess Championships at Flagstaff High on Sunday, April 13. All five are students at Sedona Charter School and members of the school’s chess club, which placed eighth in the state at the event.

Rick Okie, a parent volunteer who coaches the players and oversees the club, estimated that about 450 kids from 30 to 40 schools all over Arizona competed in the event, with 25 in his kids’ division.

Siblings George and Killian Black each scored four wins, with Forrest Hartley adding three wins of his own alongside Kai Zimmerman’s one win.

The big surprise of the event, however, came from relative newcomer Saydrin DeMayo.
